Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) projects are progressively emerging in the architectural, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) industries, indicating that many construction organizations are shifting from traditional to cutting-edge technologies. However, due to limited BIM expertise organizations in the Malaysian construction industry, there is still confusion within the sector over the interpretation of the success of BIM deployment in projects. Therefore, this research aims to propose the conceptual framework for developing BIM Competencies Appraisal for construction professionals by employing the narrative systematic review based on PRISMA. The findings reveal that the issues of BIM competencies related to the unawareness of the current BIM competency level, the lack of knowledgeable workforce among construction stakeholders, and the absence of a BIM assessment tool in the Malaysian Construction Industry can be resolved via BIM Competency-Based Performance Appraisal (BIMCPA) that able to tackle six (6) BIM elements namely people, process, technology, policy, information, and organization. In the end, it may assist in narrowing down the gap in BIM implementation, thus supporting the initiatives of increasing productivity in construction projects through innovative technologies.
