Abstract

This review comprehensively evaluates the development, applications, and impact of both conventional and bio-based plastics. Conventional plastics have been essential and commonly used in industries and humans’ daily lives since World War II but are accompanied by long-term environmental challenges. The review investigates the development of bio-based plastics, derived from renewable resources, and their potential field of application as sustainable alternatives. The environmental impact of both conventional plastics and bioplastics is also investigated. To acquire technological advancements, understanding and implementing a successful strategy for environmental management are needed. Besides that, consumers and industries need to change their mindset and highlight the importance of responsible material usage. Based on the review done, despite being necessary for daily life, conventional plastics have negative environmental effects that require immediate attention. The development and application of bio-based polymers point to a more sustainable future.
